Alcohol Addiction Disorder

Disulfiram

Disulfiram deters drinking because it interferes with alcohol metabolism, causing acetaldehyde (a substance that results from the breakdown of alcohol) to build up in the bloodstream. When taken with alcohol consumption users may experience facial flushing, throbbing headaches, rapid heart rate, rapid breathing, sweating, nausea and vomiting. 

Naltrexone

Naltrexone alters the effects of alcohol on the brain which may reduce alcohol craving and consumption. This drug is effective in most people who take it consistently. 

A long-acting form can be given by injection once a month. Naltrexone, unlike disulfiram, allows patients to choose between a goal of abstinence or control.

Acamprosate

Acamprosate is an oral medication that is used to treat Alcohol Use Disorder. While it is not a cure for alcoholism, it can help patients achieve long-term abstinence by altering the chemicals in the brain. For this treatment plan to be successful, patients can no longer be drinking alcohol for the best results.
